Complete guide about Spain Student Visa requirements

Planning to study in Spain? Securing a student visa is a key. Below you can find the information about Spain Student Visa Process. Step to begin your educational journey smoothly by knowing the Spain Student Visa requirements. This comprehensive Spain student visa guide will help you understand the Spain study visa documents, timelines, and important tips to ensure a successful application.

Who Needs a Student Visa for Spain?

If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen planning to enroll in a full-time academic: Bachelors, Masters, Vocational training, or Spanish language course in Spain lasting longer than 6 months, you must apply for a student visa before arrival. This visa allows you to legally study, reside, and in many cases, work part-time during your stay.

When to Apply for Your Spain Student Visa

It is strongly recommended that you submit your student visa application at least 2 months before your course start date. Early application helps avoid delays and allows sufficient time for document processing and appointment scheduling at the Spanish consulate or embassy.

Required Documents for the Student Visa Application

  1. Valid Passport – with a minimum validity that covers your entire stay.
  2. Acceptance Letter – from a recognized Spanish educational institution confirming your enrollment.
  3. Proof of Financial Means – bank statements, scholarship letters, or financial support evidence to cover living and study expenses.
  4. Health Insurance – mandatory private or public health insurance that covers medical expenses in Spain.
  5. Criminal Record Certificate – issued by your home country, translated and legalized if required.
  6. Medical Certificate – confirming you are free from contagious diseases.
  7. Visa Application Form – completed and signed.
  8. Passport-sized Photographs – recent and meeting specified standards.

Important Health Insurance Details

Your health insurance must be valid starting one month before your course begins and remain valid until at least 15 days after your course completion. This ensures continuous medical coverage from arrival through your entire study period and a short grace period after your course ends.

After Arrival: Registering and Getting Your Student Card

Within 30 days of arrival in Spain, international students must register with the local town hall (“empadronamiento”) and apply for the student residence card (TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) at the immigration office. This card confirms your legal stay and includes your personal and visa details.

Tips to Ensure a Successful Visa Application

  • Start the application process early — two months before your course start date.
  • Prepare all documents carefully, and ensure translations and certifications are completed if necessary.
  • Choose health insurance plans that comply with Spanish standards and coverage duration requirements.
  • Keep copies of all documents submitted.
  • Attend your consulate appointment punctually and bring all originals and copies.
  • Stay updated on any consulate-specific requirements.

Work Authorization for Student Visa Holders

Students holding a valid Spain student visa may work part-time up to 30 hours per week without the need for an additional work permit, provided that the student is enrolled in a Higher Education program and the work does not interfere with their studies. This offers a great opportunity to gain work experience and support living costs while studying.
