Move to Spain with Family: Study in Spain with work permit

Spain’s new Immigration Law (Reglamento de Extranjería, 2025) makes it easier than ever to do so legally through higher education or vocational training. This complete guide will show you how you can study in Spain, bring your family, and apply for permanent residency step by step.

You can study:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree (Public or Private University)
• Vocational Training (Formación Profesional de Grado Superior) – highly employable courses
• Doctoral or Research Programs
   

⚠️ If you're applying for a Vocational Training program or Low Cost Bachelors or Masters degrees, Spanish language proficiency (B1/B2) is mandatory in most institutions.

Once accepted into a program:

• Apply for a student visa (type D) at your nearest Spanish consulate 
• Simultaneously, apply for family reunification for your spouse and children under 18

Upon arrival:

• Register your address (empadronamiento)
• Apply for your Foreigner Identity Card (TIE)
• Enroll your children in school
   

• As a student, you can work up to 30 hours/week.
• After finishing your studies, apply for a 1-year job-seeking residency permit (estancia por búsqueda de empleo).
• If hired, transition to a work residency (Residencia y Trabajo por Cuenta Ajena).

- Every year of Student Stay counts at 50% toward Permanent Residency

- Work permit with Residency counts at 100% toward Permanent Residency

- After 5 years of legal residency (more than 183 days per year) in Spain, you will get the Permanent Residency in Spain
